Signs A Candidate Has A Strong Work Ethic
A strong work ethic is one of the most desirable traits for employers seeking fresh blood in their organizations, but how does one identify a strong work ethic in the first place? There are a few key indicators that you can look for as you interview.
Demonstrating Integrity
The first thing you should be looking for is a demonstration of integrity when it comes to achieving great results. A candidate shows integrity when they give their team credit for the accomplishments, or when they admit that their results could have been better if they had made better decisions. It is also present when the employee gives honest feedback and takes into consideration constructive criticism from others.
Discipline
Does the candidate have a system for staying organized, getting work done on time and exceeding expectations? Do they demonstrate discipline outside of the workplace by practicing a particular hobby regularly? Discipline takes many forms, and can often be spotted among those who have been self-employed or who work from home successfully. However, it can also shine through in a person’s morning gym routine.
Responsibility to the Team
Another important indicator of work ethic is how the individual relates to their team. Those with a strong work ethic seem to take it to heart that the whole team and organization is counting on them. They tend to be less concerned about taking personal credit, and more worried about the big picture. They know exactly what their responsibilities are to the team, and they are willing to help their teammates in times of need. They understand that the organization is only as strong as its weakest link. How will you know? When talking about their accomplishments, they will typically refer to what they did with their team, not individually.
Candidates who can show integrity and discipline on the spot are more likely to have the work ethic you are looking for. Those who have the humility and sense of responsibility to ensure success for the whole group are also great candidates to work with. Any candidate can tell you that they have a strong work ethic, but they have to demonstrate this quality by showing that they have walked the walk in the past.
